By default the Windows 98 driver for the WhiteHEAT USB start
the serial ports at the first available COM port starting at COM5
and install the ports in subsequent free COM slots. Sometimes it
may be necessary to change the COM port numbers to something
else. The following describes how to do this.
After the WhiteHEAT has been successfully installed and the
driver has added the additional ports into the Device Manager,
you will need to take the following steps.
- Confirm the COM port you want to move the WhiteHEAT to
does not exist by looking in the following
Start->Settings->Control
Panel->System->Device Manager->Ports (COM &
LPT)
- Run REGEDIT.
- Search for the WhiteHEAT ports entries in the registry
path as follows:
My
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\CONNECTTECH\CTIWH4\DEV_xPORTy
(Where x is the WhiteHEAT box number and
y is the port number, 0 based)
- You will need to change all references to the existing
COM port to the new one you have chosen. The keys that
need to be changed are:
FriendlyName
PortName
- Perform this modification to each port you wish to move,
as described in step 3.
- Exit REGEDIT after the modifications are complete. This
will save the new registry changes.
- Now you should see in the control panel (as described in
step 1) the COM ports in their new locations.
Applications will now associate the new COM numbers with
the appropriate ports.
