Universal PCI Reliability plus Low Profile Convenience
Connect Tech introduces the Universal PCI BlueStorm/LP

As the retail, hospitality and banking industries move towards systems that are more compact and cost efficient, system integrators and designers are big on small.

The more sophisticated consumer technology becomes, the more features retailers need to include within their systems to offer customers the fastest, most efficient service. These systems need to be expandable and flexible, to allow for future additions.

The myriad peripherals include scales, barcode scanners, magnetic or smart card readers, cash drawers, receipt printers, signature verifiers, and display screens, among others. These peripherals usually connect to the system via serial ports. POS systems therefore rely on multiple serial adapters, which themselves must be reliable in order to avoid interruption to service.

The benefits of a smaller form factor to POS systems, which include PC-based cash registers, ATMs, Kiosk machines, vending machines, lottery and ticket terminals, are obvious. A low profile system frees up valuable space on counter tops or in other situations where space is at a premium.

Adapters like Connect Tech’s BlueStorm/LP make designing efficient systems easy. The low profile Universal PCI adapter may be small, but it’s rich in features. Low profile PCI standards include the same signal protocols, electrical definitions and configuration definitions as standard PCI ad
apters, but have a much smaller footprint. The low profile form factor was designed to accommodate the fact that applications require higher density systems, but that designers still prefer to use a trusted and universally supported technology.

Overall system height and size can be greatly reduced. It also gives them the flexibility to use it in systems designed for standard PCs, since the low profile MD1 cards will also fit in standard PCI slots with a simple switch of a bracket. Designers can use the boards with confidence, knowing the product is fully PCI 2.3 compatible, designed, built and tested to maintain the strict standards set out by the PCI specifications.

The BlueStorm/LP is also perfect for the new small form factor chassis computers currently on the market. Standard sized PCI cards do not fit into these space-saving, integrated systems.
