Once the domain of spy films and sci-fi authors,
access control solutions based on biometrics are making a
strong imprint in today’s security-conscious world.
Fingerprints, and other “biological” identifiers, involve a
higher degree of access control than badges or passcodes,
which can be lost, stolen or forgotten.
Advances in
the science of biometrics and computer technology are leading
to the production of systems for use in a variety of every day

bank deposit box. Airports are testing eye scanners to
expedite the check-in process for frequent fliers; and

is located within these fingerprint terminals to pass
information from the scanner to the computer interface, where
authenticated fingerprints are stored. The product relies on
the uniqueness of an individual’s finger to authenticate
identity. These authentication devices can be integrated into
any system, whether it be access to sensitive areas within a
company, or simply logging on a verification time clock.
Originally,
Connect Tech provided the ISA based
DFlex-2 RS-485
cards, chosen for their ability to connect to the terminal at
a baud rate customized for the customer. In 2001 the customer
decided designing around the ISA bus was no longer practical,
and they upgraded to a PCI bus system. The decision to remain
with Connect Tech was based on past reliability,
quality and value, and the

was introduced into their design.
