When
a young boy in a coastal city of Lithuania needed an operation
to remove a threatening tumor from his brain, doctors at
Walter Reed Army Hospital relied on the technology of
“telemedicine” to bring the operation, via real-time video
feed, to the expert staff in Bethesda, Maryland.
Through the miracle of modern science the boy’s life was
spared.
The
operation’s success hinged on a number of factors; one being
the steady hands of the surgeon. Also crucial to the operation
was a steady video feed to the guiding surgeons in the United
States.
Malibu Research’s Smart Link communications technology allowed
the information to bounce from ship to satellite to hospital,
without disruption. Located in hostile ship environments like
the USNS Comfort, a US hospital ship used around the world for
medical emergencies, the Smart Link acquires and tracks
various satellites. The system is also used to improve
ship-to-shore communications for sailors on the Navy ship, USS
Yorktown.
“This sort of unique success and the sailors’ improved quality
of life is what drives our urgency to keep the system up and
running,” explains Malibu Research engineer Anand Kelkar. Part
of Smart Link’s continued performance depends on stabilization
of the antenna. “The task of keeping a 1 degree antenna beam
fixed on a geosynchronous satellite is a tough challenge in
rough seas.”
Up for the challenge is Connect Tech’s
Intellicon Flex-8. Malibu Research uses the rugged adapter
as part of Smart Link’s baseline design. It provides the focal
point for the several sensors required to stabilize the large
antenna system.
Ever mindful of the crucial role the Smart Link plays in so
many lives, Mr. Kelkar knows the value of reliability. “The
Flex-8
has shown continuous, trouble-free operation since its first
installation in 1998,” he informed Connect Tech.
Windows of opportunity for servicing the Smart Link systems
are short and infrequent.
When Malibu
Research needs answers from Connect Tech’s support team, the
staff ensures the information is available, quickly.
“I
commend the complete cooperation of your staff, their prompt
attention and your willingness to get personally involved,”
Mr. Kelkar recently said of the Connect Tech team.
Connect Tech knows a quality product is only half the
