Connect Tech and Guelph Organizations
Flip Green Power Switch
Guelph, Ontario -
Nov 22, 2002
Six Guelph based organizations, committed to reducing their smog and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG),
have purchased green power. The power is purchased in the form of Green Tags, through Green Tags
Ontario, an Owen Sound based clean energy co-operative.
Coal generates 25 percent of Ontario's
power and emits 20 percent of its smog, acid rain and climate change gases. According to the Canadian
Medical Association, smog kills 1,900 people a year in Ontario. Purchasing Green Tags displaces coal
generation by using wind turbine generated power. The wind turbines are located at Port Albert, north
of Goderich and south of Ferndale, on the Bruce Peninsula. Sky Generation, a Rockwood firm,
constructed the Ferndale turbine.
"The Guelph area has a well deserved reputation for supporting environmental values," says Glen
Estill, founder of Sky Generation. "The leadership of these organizations demonstrates their
commitment to the environment, to the health of their employees and their families."
The participating organizations are:
Connect Tech Inc.- communications manufacturer
EMJ Data Systems Ltd. - computer wholesaler
Five Winds International - environmental
& sustainability consultants
Ignatius Jesuit Centre of Guelph - Loyola Retreat House
Damselfly Design - graphic design company
Web Sorcery - web designer
"Reducing emissions is very much a moral
issue," says Jim Profit, of the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. "We have to look long term. Today's
generation has a responsibility to tomorrow's generation. We all need to do our part."
Steven B. Young, of Five Winds International says, "Green power is an opportunity for us to offset our
emissions, parallel to the guidance we offer our clients to consider environmental and social factors
upfront."
Web Sorcery is using their Green Tags purchase to power their web servers. This allows them to offer
certified, "Green Hosting" to their clients.
The organizations purchased Green Tags to offset from 5%-100% of their electricity. The amounts ranged
from $150 - $2500. More information on Green Tags is available at
